Northern Lights could reappear over Britain tonight as strong solar energy sees them spotted as far south as Norfolk

Skies up and down the UK could once again be ablaze with colours from the Northern Lights tonight, after they were spotted on Friday night as far south as Norfolk.

The evening hour saw a rare occasion of the Aurora Borealis - a natural phenomenon when increased solar energy heads towards earth and interacts with the atmosphere.

The Northern Lights are usually most visible within the Arctic Circle and upper Scotland. However, yesterday saw them appear as far south as East Anglia due to a strong geomagnetic storm caused by a coronal mass ejection (CME) - reams of altered particles that burst from the sun.

As the particles head towards earth, they mix with gases in the atmosphere, creating waves of colour in the night sky as oxygen atoms turn green, while nitrogen appears in hues of red, blue and pink.

The solar activity remains high this evening and forecasters indicate the Northern Lights could show themselves again, The BBC reports.

Stronger solar storms such as those over this weekend allow the Northern Lights to be seen further south across Britain, as they did last night.

The spring equinox also occurred on Friday night, which may have led to better conditions for seeing the lights.

This phenomenon, dubbed the Russell-McPherron effect, sees the Northern Lights emerge stronger during equinoxes, as the solar winds align themselves with the earth's magnetic field.

The Met Office Space Weather Prediction Centre states: "Geomagnetic activity is expected to remain... with a chance of reaching a strong storm".

Thick clouds could obscure the view in Scotland and Northern Ireland, while elsewhere, there will be clear skies during the first part of Saturday night.
