Northern Ireland weather forecast for the week ahead as thunderstorm warning in place

The new working week is set to bring some mixed news on the weather front after a prolonged warm and sunny spell.

Monday starts off with a new weather warning in place for thunderstorms and rain in parts of Northern Ireland, triggered by high temperatures.

Four yellow thunderstorm warnings are in place from 12pm to 9pm on Monday and cover parts of Scotland, Northern Ireland, England and Wales.

The yellow warnings mean thunderstorms and rain may bring disruption with potential flooding and difficult driving conditions, the Met Office says.

But not all of the region will see them, with western counties Fermanagh, Tyrone and Derry most likely to be affected.

Monday is set to begin bright and very warm with a few afternoon showers and highs of 28°C.

Slightly cooler temperatures are on the way from Tuesday onwards, with Thursday and Friday in the mid-high 20s, the forecaster added.

Met Office meteorologist Dan Stroud said: "On Monday, we're expecting a fine and hot start, temperatures rising fairly quickly during the course of the morning under strong early summer sunshine and that's likely to spark a few thundery showers.

"North parts of Northern Ireland, south west Scotland and the Highlands could see 20 to 30mm of rain in an hour during the thunderstorms, and 40 to 50mm in some spots.

"It will widely be 24C to 28C on Monday, with some spots sitting at the 30C to 32C mark. It will be warmer than Monaco, where it has hit 24.7C on Sunday and is expected to be 22 to 24C on Monday."

Here's what to expect over the next few days, according to the Met Office.

Monday:

A mainly dry start with some sunshine. Showers developing during the morning with a few heavy showers likely in the afternoon. Some areas will remain dry. Staying very warm. Maximum temperature 28 °C.

Outlook for Tuesday to Thursday:

A mainly dry few days with sunny spells. There may be a few sharp showers on Tuesday, especially in the west. Staying very warm and humid with light winds.

UK long range weather forecast: Friday 16 June - Sunday 25 June

The first half of the period will most likely be fine and settled with long periods of sunshine across most of the UK.

However, showers or thunderstorms may occur towards the west with cloudier and showery conditions in the Shetlands and western isles while the vast majority staying dry.

Light to moderate easterly winds are likely to be dominant and temperatures are likely to be warm to hot during the day and overnight, perhaps cooler along the east coast.

Later in the period, conditions are expected to remain similar throughout with dry and settled conditions likely to remain in the north of the UK. Perhaps chances of showers and thunderstorms developing towards the south of the UK.
