Northern Ireland restrictions: Michelle O'Neill gives support to Robin Swann

Northern Ireland's ministers have given their "unanimous support" to Robin Swann for lifting restrictions, Michelle O'Neill says.

Speaking at Stormont on Monday afternoon, the former Deputy First Minister said she now expects the Heath Minister to move today or tomorrow to start easing remaining Covid-19 restrictions.

On Thursday, Minister Swann received advice which highlighted potential legal complication of him acting without the endorsement of an Executive.

He then wrote to other ministers asking for their input, and asked them to respond by Monday, February 14.

He sought legal guidance after the resignation of First Minister Paul Givan last week, which also removed Michelle O'Neill from the joint office.

The resignation means the power-sharing Executive cannot meet and while other ministers are still in post, they are unable introduce any new business and can only progress work already in the system.

The Covid-19 regulations are not due to expire until March 24, but were previously reviewed by the five-party Executive every three weeks.

Yesterday, Mr Swann announced that he had tested positive for Covid-19.

The Health Minister tweeted: “Unfortunately today I have tested positive for Covid-19.

“While self isolating & following public health guidance, I will continue to carry out my duties as fully as possible.”
