Northern Ireland defender "emotional" after winning Wembley final with the Millers

Northern Ireland full-back Shane Ferguson admits it was an “emotional” experience winning silverware at English football’s iconic home of Wembley.

Ferguson made a memorable impact off the bench when he set up the final goal in Rotherham United’s 4-2 win over Sutton United in the Papa John’s Trophy final.

After helping deliver the Millers their first Football League Trophy since 1996, the 30-year-old said: “It is an unbelievable feeling.

“To come here and win in front of your family and friends and all the fans – it is a brilliant day and emotional as well.

“It is right up there for me – a final at Wembley. It is just an unbelievable day and one to really enjoy.”

Ferguson, who has been capped 54 times by Northern Ireland, was sent into the fray with only 10 minutes of normal time remaining and Rotherham trailing 2-1.

A change in formation helped tip the balance of the game in the League One club’s favour with Ferguson adding: “We probably had a little bit more legs as well.

“Sutton seemed a bit tired and we changed formation at the right time. Things just click. Sometimes they work and sometimes they don't. Thankfully it did.

“And for me to set up a goal at Wembley, for me to have that feeling is unbelievable.”
