North West 200 results: Alastair Seeley flexes his muscle with dominant double

Alastair Seeley flexed his muscle with a dominant double on the opening night of the North West 200.

The 42-year-old surged to victory in both the Supersport and Superstock races to extend his record to 26 wins.

Seeley drew a blank the last time the North West was held in 2019, failing to even podium for the first time since 2007.

But the 'Wee Wizard' proved his class once again on Thursday night to win the 600 and 1000cc classes.

Seeley finished ahead of Davey Todd in both races to cement his status as the North West 200's most successful rider.

"I think experience showed there given the amount of years I have been here," Seeley said after winning the opening Supersport race, which saw veteran Jeremy McWilliams finish on the podium.

"It was some tussle at the front and I knew Davey would come into this event strong. He has got confidence coming here, and if you have confidence on back of BSB you will ride well here.

"I think experience counts for everything here, and the monkey is off my back after 2019."

Wet conditions hampered the opening night's racing, with the Supersport contest red flagged and then restarted over a reduced four-lap distance.

The murky weather also saw pole-sitter Glenn Irwin withdrawing from the second Superstock race.

Irwin, who is also on pole for this year's Superbike races, said: "I tried my heart out this morning and did the fastest ever time around here and got pole in both classes. So I feel like I did my bit.

"I fully respect everyone lining up on the grid, but I have two young kids and there are more variables when the weather is like this.

"When it's dry I trust myself, but this is not for me."
