North Melbourne CEO Ben Amarfio resigns ahead of Alastair Clarkson's arrival

North Melbourne chief executive Ben Amarfio has resigned from his role, just two weeks after the club signed four-time premiership coach Alastair Clarkson.

The Kangaroos announced Amarfio's resignation this afternoon after he served three years as chief executive.

He will finish with the club on October 31, a day before Clarkson officially begins as Kangaroos coach.

Amarfio's departure comes just over a week since Clarkson era takes shape at Kangaroos.

General manager of football performance Dan McPherson left the club, as did assistant coaches Heath Younie and Anthony Rocca.

Former Melbourne captain Todd Viney — who worked as an assistant coach to Clarkson at Hawthorn — has been appointed general manager of football.

"On-field, we have undergone a major re-build and bold list turnover," Amarfio said in a club statement.

"Turning around our AFL program has been extremely challenging. Year two of our rebuild has proven harder than we envisaged and we weren't as competitive as we had expected.

"As CEO, ultimately that responsibility lays with me and I'm sorry that we let down our members and supporters and fell short of expectations this year.

"However, I am excited about the talented young list that we are building and I think the time is right for me to step aside and provide clear air for Alastair Clarkson, Todd Viney and our hard-working and talented football department to begin their important work."

The Kangaroos collected their second-straight wooden spoon this season after winning just two of their 22 matches.

The club sacked coach David Noble in July after just 38 matches in charge.

The Kangaroos have not reached the finals since 2016.
