North Macedonia offered eye-watering incentive to crush Cristiano Ronaldo's World Cup hopes

North Macedonia stars could receive £421,000 (€500,000) from Prime Minister Dimitar Kovacevski if they can replicate their heroics against Italy and end Cristiano Ronaldo's hopes of reaching the World Cup with Portugal.

They claimed the scalp of the reigning European Champions last week after a dramatic late winner from Aleksandar Trajkovski. Fernando Santos' side edged past Turkey to seal their place in Tuesday's final with Otavio, Diogo Jota and Matheus Luiz finding the back of the net.

The 37-year-old, who ruled out his international future hingeing on the playoff final, will lead his nation out as they hope to book their place in November's World Cup. But the North Macedonians will have extra motivation after the eye-watering cash injection, as per the Mirror.

Blagoja Milevski's side created history when they overcame Georgia to reach to their first major tournament in 2020. But they failed to get a point on the board as they bowed out after defeats to Holland, Austria and Ukraine.

Ronaldo will be 42 by the time the next instalment of the tournament comes around when it is hosted across North America. Ahead of the clash, the United star issued a rallying cry saying: "I urge the fans. I want hell breaking loose at Dragao."
