North Korea launches ballistic missile into sea east of Korean Peninsula

  • North Korea has fired a short-range ballistic missile into the sea off the east coast of the Korean peninsula, according to Japanese and South Korean defence officials.
  • South Korea ’s presidential office convened a National Security Council meeting following the test, which landed outside Japan's exclusive economic zone.
  • The launch marks the second test in a week, occurring despite efforts by US president Donald Trump to scale back joint military exercises with South Korea.
  • Kim Yo Jong, sister of leader Kim Jong Un, rejected the reduced military drills as insufficient and pledged to continue strengthening North Korea's nuclear arsenal.
