North East weather forecast for the weekend ahead of Plate Day

People across the North East have been enjoying the blistering summer sun recently as we head into the weekend. And many are keeping their fingers crossed that the good weather holds out for Plate Day.

Northumberland Plate Festival is back this Saturday with racegoers at Gosforth Park set to show off the usual array of glamorous outfits and headwear. While past Plate Days have seen a decent bit of rain, this year's highly-anticipated event could be sun-drenched.

According to the Met Office, the weather will start off dry and largely sunny but some scattered showers will develop in the west. These showers will become locally heavy over the hills but it will be sunnier and dry in the easternmost parts.

Saturday will see an attractive maximum temperature of 22C so you may need to lather yourself in suncream. Meanwhile, on Sunday it will be a generally breezy and cool day with sunshine and scattered showers.

Looking ahead to next week, there will be further showers on Monday but it will be largely dry and bright but increasingly cloudy on Tuesday, with rain tentatively moving east.

Here is a weather forecast for the weekend:

This Evening and Tonight:

Some residual showers initially, locally heavy and perhaps thundery, mainly over the hills. These will clear away north, followed by a band of rain moving northeastwards across most parts around midnight. Dry and largely clear but much cooler by dawn. Minimum temperature 10 °C.

Saturday:

Dry and largely sunny start but some scattered showers developing in the west, these becoming locally heavy over the hills. Sunnier and perhaps remaining dry in easternmost parts. Breezy. Maximum temperature 22 °C.

Outlook for Sunday to Tuesday:

Generally breezy, cool on Sunday, with sunshine and scattered showers. Warmer on Monday, with further showers. Largely dry and bright but increasingly cloudy on Tuesday, with rain tentatively moving east.
