North East neighbours celebrate the Queen's Platinum Jubilee with incredible street parties

Neighbours from across the North East gathered to celebrate the Queen's Platinum Jubilee with some incredible street parties.

It's a monumental period in the history of the country, as the Queen becomes the first British monarch to celebrate 70 years of service with a Platinum Jubilee. And residents in Westerhope, Whitley Bay, and Walker came out to celebrate in full force.

The estate of Bournemouth Gardens in Westerhope lined the street with long tables filled with sandwiches, cakes, and nibbles while residents donned Union Jack hats and flag hairbands. One resident also wore a Queen face mask as she mingled with friends and neighbours.

There were similar scenes in Winslow Place, Walker, Newcastle, where red, white, and blue bunting hung across the street and decorated tables seated some of the 150 people who attended. The completely free party had a DJ, a bouncy castle, a double-decker bus and a reptile show.

Jill Leech praised her daughter-in-law Stacey who helped raised more than £1,000 to organise the street party for the children in Walker. She said: "It was tremendous, I couldn't believe how well it went. I think Stacey deserves a little recognition for all the hard work that has been put into organising this party.

"I would say there were around 100 to 150 people who came so it was just amazing. The residents of the Ella McCambridge Home all got tea boxes and all the children got packed lunches from Asda. Everybody couldn't believe how well it went.

"It's a lovely little community where everybody helps each other so to see every single thing that was free it was just unbelievable. It was just lovely for us all to come together and celebrate the Jubilee."

Meanwhile, in Otterburn Avenue, Whitley Bay, residents enjoyed watching people dressed in T-rex costumes race down the street while people took photos with a specially-made frame. The street was decorated in a sea of flags and bunting with neighbours pictured enjoying the celebrations.
