North East MPs react as Boris Johnson narrowly escapes vote of no confidence

North East Members of Parliament have shown mixed emotions following this evening's results from a vote of no confidence against Prime Minister, Boris Johnson.

Sir Graham Brady earlier revealed that the vote of no confidence would take place this evening, after he finally received in excess of 54 letters from members of the Conservative Party, who had little to no faith in their leader.

This evening's proceedings came shortly after Sue Gray's report was published - which revealed that the Conservative leader had violated stringent Coronavirus restrictions and regulations, with parties at No 10 Downing Street while most of the UK was prevented from meeting others and attending social events.

However, when the vote came to fruition between 6pm and 8pm this evening, and the results were revealed - Boris Johnson escaped being ousted from Parliament despite pressures from opposition MPs and less-faithful members of the Tories.

Some 359 Tory Members of Parliament casted their votes this evening, with the final result of 211 votes to 148 swaying in the Prime Minister's favour - 32 votes shy of that needed to oust the PM.

And many MPs across the North East were quick to post their opinions on the ruling shortly after results were announced, many of whom furious that the PM has managed to retain his position in Parliament.

Kate Osbourne, Labour MP for arrow, wrote: "This Conservative Government is in total chaos and has let down the British people for far too long. Voters will not forget this moment at the next general election," while Bridget Phillipson, Labour MP for Houghton and Sunderland South, retweeted Keir Starmer's thoughts on the matters.

In a Tweet, Starmer said: "The choice is clearer than ever before: Divided Tories propping up Boris Johnson with no plan to tackle the issues you are facing. Or a united Labour Party with a plan to fix the cost of living crisis and restore trust in politics.

"Labour will get Britain back on track."

Emma Lewell-Buck, MP for South Shields, added: "211 Tory MPs are happy for our country to be led by a liar. Shame on them."

Blaydon MP, Liz Twist, shared a similar sentiment, writing: "211 Tory MPs think a liar who broke the law is their best option for leader. I think this says a lot about where the Tories are and their contempt for the country."

However, other MPs from the region were glad to see that Johnson will continue to lead the United Kingdom, after boasting their confidence in him before the vote took place.

Tory MP for Middlesbrough, Simon Clarke, posted: The PM has the backing of the Parliamentary party and deservedly so. We have a mission to deliver - levelling up life chances, tackling cost of living pressures, securing the benefits of Brexit and unleashing economic growth.

"Let’s get on with the job we were elected to do."

After tonight's vote of no confidence, Boris Johnson will be safe in his position without a repeat of today's proceedings for at least 12 months.

The last Prime Minister to face a vote of no confidence was Theresa May in December 2018, with MPs less than impressed with her Brexit strategy. May would go on to survive the vote, but would resign from her position of power the following year, amidst public concern and a lack of faith in their leader.

Do you think Boris Johnson should have been ousted by MPs in this evening's vote?
