Transgender people who marched through Newcastle to show they are 'proud and visible' have hit out at government plans leaving them vulnerable to so-called 'conversion therapy'.
Widely condemned by mental health professionals, the practice is designed to stop people from being LGBT+. In the case of sexuality, this would be preventing same-sex attraction, while for transgender (trans) people, the aim is to convince people to no longer identify as a gender other than the one they were assigned at birth.
On Thursday, the day a group of trans people marched through Newcastle City Centre to mark 'Transgender Day of Visibility', there was outcry in response to reports the government was set to drop its long-anticipated plans for a ban on the harmful therapy.
