Though very few people need ventilators, hundreds remain in North East hospitals with Covid-19, official data shows
With Office for National Statistics figures suggesting the coronavirus remains hugely prevalent - and that one in 17 of us had the virus in the week to April 16 - hospital data shows there are still substantial numbers of people being admitted while positive. Though this includes people where Covid-19 is not the main reason they're in hospital, it shows the virus remains in circulation in our communities.
As of April 22, there were 2,168 Covid-positive patients in hospital in the North East and Yorkshire. This figure has fallen slightly, but the latest data for the five NHS acute hospital trusts in our region shows that the last week covered by the data has seen some of the highest figures for Covid-19 hospitalisations seen since January.
