The number of new cases of Covid continues to fall across the North East with the region recording a substantial overall 30% drop. In the latest recorded seven day period, the total number of new cases was down from the previous figure of 9,205 to 6,473.
In total numbers, County Durham saw the saw the biggest reduction. In all there were 1,769 new cases there in that time, down 750 - or 30% - on the previous seven days. Percentage-wise, Sunderland recorded the biggest drop of 37% as the number of new cases there in the seven day period to April 17 was 839, down 496.

South Tyneside saw the smallest percentage fall of 19% with 443 new cases, down 104. Elsewhere in the region, Newcastle recorded 872 new cases, down 320 (27%); Gateshead saw 651 new cases, down 318 (33%); and in Northumberland there were 1,158 new cases, down 445 - or 28% - on the previous seven days.
Finally in North Tyneside there were 740 new cases of Covid recorded, down 299 or 29% on the previous seven days, according to the Government figures.
