The Special Task Force (STF) of Uttar Pradesh police on Thursday arrested a person for allegedly posting an Artificial Intelligence (AI) generated “deepfake” of U.P. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. The Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) and head of U.P. STF Amitabh Yash said the fake video was used to spread misleading facts and strengthening anti-national elements.
“On May 1, an AI-generated deepfake video of the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister goes viral after it was posted on X from a handle. The video generated through AI was used to spread misleading facts, strengthening anti-national elements,” Mr. Yash added. The accused named Shyam Kishor Gupta was arrested and further legal action is being initiated according to the law.
The STF registered a First Information Report (FIR) under sections 468 (forgery for cheating), 505(2) (statement conducting to public mischief) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and under provisions of the Information Technology (IT) Act at the Noida Cyber Crime police station.
