‘Nobody has ever felt hugged from within by a lettuce leaf’ – a love letter to soup

We made it. As I write this, a soft drizzle is falling from a steely grey sky. Grass is fully green again, trees are shedding and my stomach is rumbling for one thing and one thing only. Listen carefully around lunchtime and you can almost hear the metallic clunk-and-peel of a million tins being opened across the land. Yes, soup season is upon us.

I’m a soup person, what gave it away? And like all soup people, I’m coming into my full power right around now. Pulling on cardigans, fetching electric blankets down from the loft, beginning another Gilmore Girls rewatch. Season of mists, mellow fruitfulness and a nice steaming bowl of Heinz vegetable soup.
