The 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine has been awarded to Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel “for their discoveries concerning light-gated ion channels and optogenetics.”
The three scientists were recognised for discoveries that made it possible to control the activity of nerve cells using light. Their work led to the development of optogenetics, a technique that allows researchers to activate or silence specific cells with light.
