'No team gets that other than Liverpool' - former Crystal Palace winger fumes live on air about penalty

Former Crystal Palace winger Darren Ambrose has claimed that no Premier League side “other than Liverpool” would be awarded a penalty in the situation involving Diogo Jota.

With the game at 2-1, the Reds were awarded a penalty in the 87th minute after the Portuguese forward collided with Palace goalkeeper Vicente Guaita.

After initially waving away appeals for a penalty, referee Kevin Friend was asked by VAR Craig Pawson to review the incident, which led him to reverse his decision and point to the spot.

However, Ambrose was left enraged by the incident and viewed it as the latest example of officials pandering to “the big teams”.

RATINGS: Alisson and Andy Robertson excellent against Crystal Palace

“An absolutely outrageous penalty decision, absolutely outrageous,” the 37-year-old told talkSPORT .

Diogo Jota has waited for Guaita to come out, he’s missed the ball, he’s run into the goalkeeper and they’ve given a penalty.

“Sorry, no team gets that other than Liverpool.

“Honestly, Liverpool, Man City, Man United, all the big teams get them decisions - they seem to get them decisions.

“It’s a game of opinions. I know that and I’m sure a lot of Liverpool supporters will say, ‘yeah, it’s 100 per cent a penalty’, but come on. If you’re honest with yourselves, that was not a penalty.

“It would’ve still finished 2-1. I still think Liverpool deserved the win but Crystal Palace were getting on top, they were getting back into the game and there was a chance they could have potentially nicked an equaliser at the end of the game.”

Ambrose, who won Palace’s goal of the season in each of his three years at Selhurst Park, is an iconic figure at the club and scooped the Championship player of the month in November 2009

Fabinho converted from 12 yards to put the game beyond doubt for the Reds in the final minutes, after Palace had looked to threaten Liverpool’s first-half lead.

Though Ambrose’s accusations of bias from officials would not be welcomed by Jota himself, who was overlooked in his appeals for what seemed to be a clear penalty against Spurs last month.
