No seat queries for students back from Ukraine at GMCH-32 so far

CHANDIGARH: Till now, GMCH-32 has not received any query for MBBS intake for students who have returned from Ukraine. Also, with lecture halls filled to capacity, no place for hostellers and only one teacher for 150 students, there is not enough infrastructure to accommodate more than 50 students.

“Lecture halls are small in capacity and if students exceed 180, there is no place to sit,” said a faculty. There is shortage of faculty as well. “We are in the process of filling posts. There is no such data compiled for the faculty required,” said director principal, GMCH, Prof Jasbinder Kaur.

Sources said that during the pandemic, students were shifted to the bigger hall as lecture halls were small in size. As per the National Medical Council (NMC), laboratories should have the capacity for 60 students.

A total of 150 students in GMCH are divided into three batches of 50 each for practicals. Also, the NMC mentions that minimum of four lecture theatres preferably be air conditioned, of gallery type , each with a seating capacity of 20% more than the annual student intake, are required. The requirement for 200 seats is the same as for 150 seats.

However, if more faculty are recruited, the college can enhance its total intake to 200 seats soon. It has been two years since the intake has been increased from 100 to 150 seats. Till 2014, the college had 50 MBBS seats.

GMCH officials said that this time, there were fewer applicants for the MBBS intake as eligibility norms had changed.

“There were not more than 250 applicants for the 150 seats. Intake for general seats is 92. This implies that 38% of the total applicants were selected,” said a faculty.
