LUCKNOW: If those who came to power after India gained Independence had listened to Veer Savarkar, India would not have been divided and as the country celebrates 75 years of independence, the horrors of partition would not have marred the happiness of the event, said chief minister Yogi Adityanath on Saturday.
Speaking at an event to mark the 140th birth anniversary of Hindutva ideologue Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, the CM said that there have been several attempts to tarnish his image, first by the British and then, after Independence, by those who were in power. "When I talk of Savarkar, I talk of a 20th century hero. There was nobody like him in that century, no bigger revolutionary, writer or poet than him. The honour that he should have been given after Independence, he did not get," the CM said.
