Among 220 people with inflammatory bowel disease who accidentally received live vaccines while on immune-modifying drugs, none developed measles, mumps, rubella, chickenpox or shingles within the following 30 days, according to research presented at the American College of Gastroenterology's annual meeting.
The finding offers some reassurance to patients with Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis who learn that they were mistakenly given a live vaccine. According to ACG, such errors can happen because of gaps in medical records or because a vaccine was given before the patient's IBD diagnosis was known.
