At least half of primary schools in Northumberland do not have a male classroom teacher, a study has found.
The study, carried out by Warwick Business School, found that across England nearly one in three primary schools in England do not have a male classroom teacher. Northumberland is one of just two counties in England where fewer than half of schools have a male teacher, with the other being Rutland in the East Midlands.
The proportion of male school secondary teachers remains at a record low (35%), the study also found. Researchers said boys from poorer backgrounds would benefit from having a male teacher in school, but they are less likely to have one.
