Cork City defender Cian Coleman will have to serve a two-match suspension after the Leesiders’ appeal for wrongful dismissal was rejected on Monday by the FAI.
Coleman was sent off deep into injury-time during City’s 2-1 defeat to Dundalk last Friday.
His was the second red card of the night for the visitors to Oriel Park, with Josh Honohan picking up two bookings in the space of two minutes close to the end of the game.
Cork were 1-0 ahead at that stage, thanks to Tunde Owolabi’s 19th minute opener.
However, Cameron Elliott equalised in the 94th minute, six minutes after Honohan’s red, and Coleman was dismissed moments later for a foul in front of the home bench.
Patrick Hoban then rubbed salt into the managerless Leesiders’ wounds when he netted a 97th minute winner.
Cork appealed Coleman’s sending off, but the FAI’s Independent Appeal Committee ruled that the decision by referee Damien MacGraith should stand.
The FAI released the verdict on Monday, noting: “An Independent Appeal Committee of the FAI has rejected Cork City FC’s appeal for wrongful dismissal following Cian Coleman’s red card for serious foul play in Cork City FC’s SSE Airtricity Men’s Premier Division fixture versus Dundalk FC on 12 May, 2023.
“In accordance with the FAI Disciplinary Regulations, Cian Coleman will serve a two-match suspension.”
