'No criminality' detected after Rutherglen blaze which saw residents evacuated from homes

There was no criminality detected after a building fire in Rutherglen, Police Scotland has confirmed.

The fire took hold at what is believed to have been the Royal Burgh House in the South Lanarkshire town shortly before 11.30pm on Thursday, October 13.

The incident caused residents in flats nearby to be evacuated as fire crews fought to bring the flames under control. People in surrounding properties were also advised to keep their windows and doors closed.

Emergency Services rushed to the scene, with the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service confirming they had received over 20 calls from concerned locals about the inferno.

Following their attendance, a probe was launched over the dramatic event. Officers have now concluded that no criminality took place and the investigation has subsequently been stood down.

Footage taken at the scene showed black smoke billowing from the red-hot structure, as seven fire engines and two high-reach appliances darted to the commercial building, which is located next to a petrol station.

Road closures remain in place at Caledonia Avenue at its junction with Main Street, Rutherglen, and King Street at its junction with Farmeloan Road.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Following investigation, no criminality has been established following the building fire in King Street, Rutherglen on Thursday, October 13 2022. No further police action."

A SFRS spokesperson added: “A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 11.18pm on Thursday, October 13 to reports of a fire affecting a building at King Street, Rutherglen."
