The family of a young mother allegedly targeted in a fatal attack with a car in Brisbane are struggling to understand the "cowardly act".

Kiesha Thompson, 23, was deliberately struck, police allege, by the four-wheel drive while walking home on a footpath after dropping her daughter at day care south of the city on Friday.
