A tragic incident occurred on Monday morning when a New Jersey Transit train collided with a fallen tree on the tracks, resulting in the death of the train operator and injuries to nearly two dozen passengers. The fatal collision took place around 6 a.m. on the River Line near the Roebling station outside of Trenton.
New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy expressed his condolences, stating that an investigation is underway and offering prayers for all those affected by the tragedy.
According to NJ Transit officials, out of the 42 customers on board, 23 sustained non-life-threatening injuries, with most being minor. The train operator was tragically confirmed deceased, while the remaining 19 passengers were provided with bus accommodations. New Jersey Transit Police are currently on the scene conducting an investigation.
The cause of the fallen tree on the tracks remains unclear at this time. As a result of the incident, River Line service has been suspended in both directions between Trenton and Florence stations due to downed trees obstructing the tracks near Roebling. Substitute bus service is being arranged to assist affected passengers.
The River Line branch of New Jersey Transit, which operates between Trenton and Camden, is working to address the aftermath of this devastating event and ensure the safety and well-being of its passengers.
