Anyone who bought a Niwali-brand tejocote supplement online may have a bottle that federal testing identified as yellow oleander, a poisonous plant that can disrupt the heart's rhythm. Global Mix Inc. of Middle Village, New York, announced on September 21 that it is recalling Niwali Tejocote Capsules and Niwali Tejocote Pieces after FDA analysis found the products appear to be yellow oleander rather than tejocote, also known as Mexican hawthorn.
The notice comes with a catch for buyers. The company says it cannot contact every purchaser because the online marketplace that handled the sales does not share buyer contact details with sellers, which leaves the search largely to consumers.
