NIssan's North East plant is creating 300 new jobs as it ramps up plans for its net zero revolution.
The Sunderland site of car giant Nissan is gearing up to launch production of two new eco-friendly versions of its popular crossover vehicles – the Juke and the new electrified version of the Qashqai, the plant’s most successful ever model. And as the plant ramps up its EV36Zero journey, it is recruiting for 300 people, to work in a range of areas including manufacturing, engineering and maintenance.
Nissan pioneered the crossover segment when it launched the Qashqai 15 years ago, triggering production of more than three million vehicles. Now, the Qashqai is set to be equipped with Nissan’s unique e-Power technology, a groundbreaking powertrain.

Michael Jude, HR director, said: “The electrification of Qashqai and Juke is a huge leap forward for our plant, and new recruits will play an important role in delivering these fantastic cars to our customers. Beyond that, anyone joining Nissan will be working towards our bright EV36Zero future.
“There has never been a better time to join our world class team, so I would urge anyone who thinks they have what it takes to have a look at our Careers at Nissan website.”
Nissan announced the EV36Zero project last year amid moves to supercharge Nissan’s drive to carbon neutrality, establishing a new 360-degree solution for zero-emission motoring. It will see the plant build the company’s next-generation EV crossover as well as the development of a new battery gigafactory, built by Nissan’s battery partner AESC Envision.
The plans also include Sunderland City Council’s renewable energy Microgrid, a project to deliver 100% renewable electricity for Nissan and its suppliers.
As part of the recruitment drive, all new employees will go through a comprehensive onboarding program, as well as benefits including a pension, private health care and the use of an onsite fitness centre.
There will also be two recruitment events including an online engineering event on Thursday, June 30 at 7pm, as well as an event at the plant for maintenance roles on Saturday July 16.
Earlier this year the car giant and its partners signalled huge investment to come in electric vehicles over the next few years.
The alliance of carmakers Nissan, Renault and Mitsubishi said they will jointly launch 35 new electric vehicles over the next five years based on five common platforms, including a successor to the Nissan Micra. They also signalled a huge increase in global battery production.
Renault, Nissan and Mitsubishi have already invested billions of pounds in electric vehicles and the Alliance announced it is accelerating that with a total of €23bn (around £19bn) more investment in the next five years on electrification.
