Ninth places round out Olympic sailing campaign

Australia's sailors ended their Olympic campaign with a pair of ninth places after maintaining their gold medal streak in Marseille's light conditions.

Breiana Whitehead came up against American formula kite star Daniela Moroz in a semi-final and finished fourth, giving her ninth overall.

Perth pair Nia Jerwood and Conor Nicholas placed sixth in the mixed dinghy medal race.

That also gave them a final placing of ninth after a campaign marked by a disqualification in one early round and another abandoned mid-race when they had a good position.

Matt Wearn's coronation on Wednesday in the men's dinghy means Australia have won at least one sailing gold for five-straight Olympics.

They also won a silver through Grae Morris in men's windsurfing, plus Thursday's results gave them three top-10 finishes with an inexperienced Olympic sailing team.

"(It is) definitely a mix of emotions," Whitehead said of her Olympic debut.

"So happy to be in the top 10, but a little bit gutted by the (last) race. It happens and its sudden death so you're in it or you're not.

"It's going to take a while to calm down and chill out. It was definitely one of the toughest races I've had.".

Jerwood said she and Nicholas were proud of how they raced through the week.

"It hasn't always been perfect but when things do go wrong, we fight back really hard and make it work," she said.

Austria won the mixed dinghy gold medal and Italy took out the mixed multihull.

Moroz, the six-time world champion, failed to medal in the kite, finishing fourth as Eleanor Aldridge from Great Britain claimed gold.
