Nine upcoming Paul Mescal movies to watch out for after Oscar nominated performance

Oscar nominee Paul Mescal has been very busy and has a host of upcoming projects lined up after his Oscar nomination.

The 27-year-old Maynooth actor, who was nominated for Best Actor for his role in Aftersun, continues to rise in popularity in Hollywood and has no trouble finding movies to star in. He also experiments with different roles and genres, from a gay romance war drama and whacky sci fi movies to popular musical adaptations, and the sequel of what has been considered "one of the greatest historical epic films ever made".

Here is the list of every upcoming Paul Mescal movie for all those who loved him in Normal People and Aftersun.

Foe (TBD)

Mescal will star alongside Saoirse Ronan and Aaron Pierre in this science fiction thriller film based on the novel of the same name. The film will revolve around a married couple (Mescal and Ronan) whose lives are turned upside down when a stranger (Pierre) arrives at their farm and informs the husband he will be sent to a large space station. The wife meanwhile would have to live with a biomechanical duplicate of her husband.

Strangers (TBD)

Another book adaptation, Strangers is a fantasy drama film directed by Andrew Haigh. It follows the story of London-based screenwriter Adam who, after an encounter with his neighbour Harry, discovers in his childhood home his long-dead parents looking the same as they did 30 years ago.

Mescal will play the enigmatic Harry, while Dubliner Andrew Scott (Moriarty from Sherlock and the Hot Priest from Fleabag) will play the main character Adam. Claire Foy (The Crown) and Jamie Bell (Jane Eyre) will star as Adam's parents.

God's Creatures (March 24, 2023)

While technically a 2022 production, the film has not yet been seen by the public. God’s Creatures opened the 2023 Dublin International Film Festival in February, and is set to be released to Irish cinemas on March 24.

Mescal and Emily Watson will play Irish mother-son duo Brian and Aileen. The movie will see their family, along with the entire community, nearly ripped apart after Aileen tells a lie for Brian after he commits a heinous act.

Gladiator sequel (TBD)

The Normal People star will also appear in the highly anticipated sequel of Gladiator, which helped Russel Crowe win an Oscar. It will be directed by Ridley Scott while the script is written by David Scarpa. The story will follow in the footsteps of Lucius, the son of Lucilla and nephew of Commodus.

Merrily We Roll Along (TBD)

Mescal will play talented Broadway composer Franklin Shepard who abandons his friends and career to become a Hollywood producer. What's really interesting about this musical is that it is set to be filmed throughout 20 years and production will commence every few years to reflect the characters' age. The actual movie, however, will be in reverse chronological order.

Mescal replaced Blake Jenner who was left out of the film due to domestic violence allegations from his ex-wife and Supergirl star Melissa Benoit.

The End of Getting Lost (TBD)

This “wildly beautiful and darkly sinister” thriller tells the story of a young married couple traveling through Europe to celebrate their first year of marriage—a year that the woman has no memory of. The couple hop borders across Europe trying to escape their past as their old lives threaten to catch up with them and the truth grows more elusive. Based on the novel of the same name, the movie will star Mescal as the sinister husband while Margaret Qualley (The Leftovers) is rumoured to play the wife.

Carmen (2023)

This musical is a modern update of the popular opera of the same name, with Mescal replacing Jamie Dornan as the main male protagonist. The Oscar nominee stars alongside “Scream VI” breakout Melissa Barrera, as they play star-crossed lovers Carmen and Aiden.

The story follows a Mexican woman trying to cross the border following the brutal murder of her mother, and an American marine veteran with PTSD struggling to adjust to civilian life. “Carmen” premieres in select markets April 21 from Sony Pictures Classics.

The History of Sound (TBD)

The Co Kildare native will star in this gay romantic war drama based on the Pushcart Prize-winning book by American author Ben Shattuck who will also write the screenplay. The story revolves around the lives of two young men, Lionel (Mescal) and David (Charles from the Crown) during World War I as they set out to record the lives, voices and music of their American countrymen.

A Spy by Nature (TBD)

Mescal will be channeling James Bond in a yet another book-to-movie adaptation. This one follows disillusioned twenty-something Alec Milius whose gift for deception catches the eye of MI6. Alec subsequently gets caught up in the thrusts of a geopolitical war on commodities involving the British and the Americans.
