The former Croatia international Nikola Kalinic has signed for Hajduk Split until the end of the season on a deal that will pay him €1 (86p).

Kalinic started his career with Hajduk, making his debut in the 2005-06 season, and has gone back for a third spell just over five months after he departed at the end of his contract. He will be 36 on Friday and was a free agent after taking a break. The striker described it as the “easiest deal” he had signed with the club and confirmed his salary.

“Nikola returns with one aim: help Hajduk to win the title after 19 years,” the director Mindaugas Nikolicius said. The team are top of the Croatian league, six points ahead of Rijeka, who have a game in hand.

Kalinic has played in the Premier League with Blackburn, Serie A with Fiorentina, Milan, Roma and Verona, and La Liga with Atlético Madrid. He will wear the No 9 shirt he has always had at Hajduk after Aleksandar Trajkovski voluntarily gave it up and took No 27, the club said.
