Nikki Haley clarifies stance on Texas secession amid criticism

Nikki Haley Former United States Ambassador to the United Nations

In a recent interview, Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley clarified her position on a topic that had garnered attention - the possibility of Texas seceding from the United States. Haley walked back her previous comment that Texas could exercise its right to secede, stating firmly, 'No. According to the Constitution, they can't.'

Haley acknowledged that while Texas has often discussed secession, the Constitution does not permit such an action. However, she did recognize the underlying sentiments behind these discussions. Haley emphasized that the desire for secession stems from people feeling unheard by the government. She acknowledged the need for effective communication and representation to address this sentiment.

These remarks mark a shift in Haley's stance from comments made just a week prior. During a radio interview, she had said, 'If Texas decides they want to do that, they can do that. If that whole state says 'We don’t want to be part of America anymore,' I mean that’s their decision to make.' However, Haley's recent clarification demonstrates her commitment to upholding constitutional principles.

It is worth noting that the Supreme Court ruled in 1869 that states do not have a constitutional right to unilaterally secede. While Haley's previous remarks aligned with the belief that states possess the right to secede from the rest of the country, this legal precedent stands firm.

Haley has faced controversy in the past due to comments related to history and the Civil War. In December, she faced backlash when she failed to mention slavery as a cause of the Civil War during a town hall. She later clarified her comments, acknowledging the pivotal role of slavery in the conflict.

As the Republican primary progresses, Haley is under pressure to perform well and gain traction. Despite losing the first two contests to former President Donald Trump, her campaign received a boost with $16.5 million in new donations in January, marking her best month of fundraising to date. Haley remains determined and has stated that while beating Trump in her home state's primary may not be necessary, she hopes for improved results compared to New Hampshire.

Nikki Haley's recent shift in rhetoric regarding Texas secession demonstrates her adherence to constitutional principles. While acknowledging the desire for secession, Haley clarifies that such an action is not permitted under the Constitution. As she continues her campaign, she aims to build momentum and improve her standing in the Republican primary.
