'Nightmare' roadworks causing 'mayhem' on busy road in Hyson Green

Nightmare roadworks through the centre of Hyson Green are causing 'mayhem' for motorists, business owners and residents.

The project in Gregory Boulevard started on January 4 and will take five weeks to complete.

A lane has been blocked off in both directions and the work is being carried out by Severn Trent Water as part of a £1.5m investment in the area to upgrade a network of water pipes.

But local businesses and commuters said they had been affected by the disruption.

Harriett Dean, 24, who drives through Gregory Boulevard on her commute home, said the disruption had caused "mayhem".

She said: “I can’t avoid it and it adds on so much time to my journeys.

“My main thing is the build up of traffic is scary when you’re trying to turn on a tram line.

“I think a lot of drivers always seem really frustrated when we’re waiting in queues.

“It’s an absolute nightmare, I avoid driving when I can now as it’s ridiculous.”

Ziavr Chouvhury, who sells items on a stand outside the Mosque and Islamic Centre, said: "People aren't walking this way anymore which is affecting me.

"It's very loud and it's annoying for everyone.

"The traffic is also building up outside my stall, it's bad."

Millie Wright, 20, who lives opposite the roadworks, said her car had been blocked in because of the disruption.

"It's really annoying, they've blocked our cars in so we can't use them," she said.

"We can only use them when they've gone, yesterday I wanted to go shopping but I couldn't.

"They start really early in the morning, it wakes you up.

"It's very loud."

A Severn Water Trent spokesperson said: “The essential work we’re carrying out on Gregory Boulevard is part of a wider £1.5m investment we’re making across the Forest Fields area of the city, to upgrade almost six kilometres of water pipes.

“To keep our engineers and other road users safe, we’ve put a temporary lane closure in place while we’re working in the area.

“We understand this is causing some disruption and we’re truly sorry for any inconvenience. However, when we’ve finished, customers will be left with a modern and reliable water network that’ll last for generations.”
