Nicole Kidman has spoken publicly for the first time about her divorce from Keith Urban, telling Variety in a new interview published on Wednesday 11 March that she is 'always going to be moving toward what's good' as the former couple rebuilds life after their split.

The Babygirl star, 58, filed for divorce from Urban, also 58, in September 2025 in Nashville after 19 years of marriage, with the divorce between Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban finalised on 6 January this year.

News that the pair had separated surfaced in late September last year, when a source told People that Kidman and Urban had been living apart 'since the beginning of summer.' At the time, multiple insiders briefed that the actress was largely based at the family home in Nashville with their daughters Sunday Rose, now 17, and Faith Margaret, 15, while Urban had 'acquired his own residence' in the same city. Within a day of those reports, Kidman moved to formalise the split, citing 'irreconcilable differences' after nearly two decades together.

Nicole Kidman, Keith Urban And A Family 'Moving Toward What's Good'

In the Variety interview, Kidman keeps the emotional temperature low but the message clear. Asked directly about the divorce, she replies; 'I'm always going to be moving toward what's good. What I'm grateful for is my family and keeping them as is and moving forward. That's that.'

She is careful to draw a line between public curiosity and private upheaval. 'Everything else I don't discuss out of respect,' she says, stressing that she and Urban are determined to maintain a united front for their daughters. 'I'm staying in a place of, 'We are a family,' and that's what we'll continue to be.'

Kidman then briefly, almost wistfully, acknowledges the speed with which family life has changed. Referring to Sunday and Faith, she calls them 'my beautiful girls, my darlings, who are suddenly women.' It is one of the few moments where she lets sentiment show, hinting at how the end of the marriage has collided with a new phase of motherhood.

The actress also explains why she spent much of 2025 out of view while the marriage was unravelling. 'Last year, I was quiet. I had other things going on. I was in my shell,' the Eyes Wide Shut star admits. That low profile was widely noted at the time and, in hindsight, reads as a deliberate retreat while lawyers, children and a long relationship all had to be managed at once.

Divorce From Keith Urban Leaves Kidman 'Holding The Family Together'

When the separation between Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban first leaked, people close to the couple painted a picture of strain that had been building behind the scenes. According to People, several sources insisted Kidman was the one 'holding the family together through this difficult time since Keith has been gone,' effectively acting as the primary parent while Urban focused on work and his new home in Nashville.

Those same insiders suggested the split appeared largely one-sided, alleging that Kidman had been 'working desperately to save their marriage' even as Urban set up separate living arrangements. None of those claims has been directly addressed by either party, and Kidman's new comments stop well short of assigning blame. Still, the contrast between her stoic present-day tone and the reported turmoil of last summer is hard to ignore.

Legal documents, as described in coverage of their settlement, underscore how stark the new arrangements are. After Kidman filed in September 2025, the divorce was signed off on 6 January, with the actress reportedly designated the primary parent. According to the Daily Mail, Kidman is to spend 306 days of the year with Sunday and Faith, while Urban has been allocated 59 days, described as 'every other weekend.' The figures, if accurate, show just how decisively the day-to-day responsibility for the teenagers now sits with their mother.

What is clearer is how determined she seems to keep the break-up from becoming a rolling soap opera. By refusing to rehash grievances and repeatedly returning to the idea of 'family,' Kidman is nudging the story away from scandal and towards something calmer, if still painful; two famous people in late middle age, disentangling almost 20 years together while trying not to blow up the lives of two teenage girls.
