Former Alabama coach Nick Saban has never been afraid to tell it like it is. It comes with the territory of being a seven-time national champion and the greatest college football coach of all time.
So his opinion regarding former New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick reportedly interviewing for the head coaching job at North Carolina is highly valued.
“Bill is an outstanding coach. He’s very well organized. He’s a good teacher. I think he relates well with the players. So I think he would do a great job in college,” Saban said on “The Pat McAfee Show.” “The only thing that would be different is recruiting, but as you say, relationship building is not as important, not that Bill wouldn’t be good at that.
“It’s not as important now that you pay players. I think it becomes a little bit more about the money and the deal that you make with them, so it is a little bit more like pro football. I think Bill knows how to manage that and would do a good job.”
Saban coached under Belichick as a former defensive coordinator with the Cleveland Browns, and the pair have remained close friends ever since.
Time will tell how serious Belichick is about a potential jump to college. He’s only 15 wins away from surpassing Don Schula as the winningest coach in NFL history, and there could be multiple head coaching jobs opening up at the end of the season.
Will Belichick chase history in the NFL or look to forge a new history in college football?
