Nick Pope 'intelligent' Callum Wilson verdict ahead of England's World Cup opener

Nick Pope believes Callum Wilson has all the attributes to succeed with England at the World Cup in Qatar. The Newcastle United striker has missed a chunk of the season through injury, but when he's played, he's scored for Eddie Howe's side.

On his day, the Magpies number nine is one of the most prolific strikers in the Premier League and his form with the Toon saw him earn a call-up to the Three Lions' squad. Gareth Southgate opted to leave former Newcastle striker Ivan Toney at home, despite major calls to take him to Qatar after scoring ten goals in 14 appearances this season.

Wilson on the other hand, has scored six goals in 11 games, with Newcastle sitting third in the Premier League. At 30-years-old, this could be the striker's last chance to feature at a major tournament with his country.

Pope believes England supporters will see all the strengths Newcastle fans have seen this season, when the tournament kick starts. He told talkSPORT : “He’s someone who leads the line really well, whether he plays on his own up front or in a two.

"He’s a really intelligent player, strong, quick, really good in the box, whether that’s one-touch finishes or beating a man and finishing. I think they’re all strengths of his and strengths we’ve seen this season.”
