Nick McCarthy admitted that he almost quit rugby due to fears surrounding his sexuality.
The 27-year-old Leinster scrum-half publicly announced that he was gay on Monday (June 20), but says he feared he would not be able to be openly homosexual and continue in his current job.
For this reason, McCarthy considered walking away from the sport and his career altogether until he took strength from other athletes such as footballer Josh Cavallo and American footballer Carl Nassib, in addition to his bisexual team-mate Jack Dunne.
