Nicaragua has announced its decision to sever diplomatic relations with Israel in response to the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Vice President Rosario Murillo clarified that this action is directed towards the Israeli government and not its citizens.
The move follows a speech by Nicaragua's foreign minister at the UN General Assembly, where he strongly criticized Israel and its allies for what he described as genocide in the Middle East. Nicaragua had previously sought to join a genocide lawsuit against Israel at the International Court of Justice, aligning itself with South Africa's legal action.
Israel has consistently denied the genocide allegations, asserting that its military actions in Gaza are carried out in self-defense against Hamas. Israeli officials maintain that their operations are targeted at specific militant groups and not aimed at the Palestinian population as a whole.
