Niall Currie hopes potential recruits will realise 'what a big club Portadown is'

Niall Currie has revealed his frustration with the transfer market as he tries to bolster his Portadown squad to aid their Premiership survival hopes.

The Ports are currently 12 points off the relegation play-off spot with 13 games to go.

There has been a turnover of players since Currie replaced Paul Doolin at the end of October with a number of comings and goings.

But the Portadown boss admitted it hasn't been a straightforward task in recruiting new personnel.

With the window set to close on Tuesday Currie is hoping he can attract some new talent but admitted he has been frustrated due to some players' demands or their refusal to switch to the basement boys.

"We're shopping in a different market, we have to be honest about the situation," said the Ports boss.

"There aren't a lot of players who don't want to come because of the situation we're in, and for some it's about money and contracts.

"But the situation we're in we can't commit to 18-month contracts because we don't know where we are going to be.

"We'll keep trying and hopefully people will still realise what a big club this is.

"We had six or seven players leaving the club and we have brought in four or five starters.

"But we have also brought in a few young players to bulk the squad out and give us cover in certain areas."

Currie freely admits the uncertainty of where the club will be playing next season is a major factor.

But he is demanding more from his players as they keep fighting for survival.

Currie said he was "embarrassed and humiliated" by the manner of their 6-1 defeat by Linfield on Saturday and was adamant things need to change.

"Playing for this club should matter and that was the big disappointment against Linfield," he said.

"I can only feel for the supporters. I'm a Portadown man myself and it's embarrassing and humiliating for me so the supporters are bound to feel the same.

"All the goals are shockers, every one of them.

"We were well in the game at half time but once the third goal goes in it's a pin in the balloon moment.

"I thought we could have been coming in level at half-time.

"Today is a humiliating day. I don't care about levels, and people talk about full-time football, but we can do better than that.

"We shouldn't be getting beat 6-1 at home by anybody.

"If you keep having to say the same things, but the same things keep happening then obviously you need upgrades.

"They had two attacks in the first half and scored two goals and the second half was the same."
