The NHS is facing a “workforce crisis” as thousands of doctors and nurses leave their posts.
According to NHS digital data 3,461 more doctors, nurses, and other healthcare staff were recruited to work in Merseyside in 2021 than in 2015 - a total of 7,152 new starters. However, that was offset by the 4,904 employees who left the NHS in our area last year.
And as demands on the health service radically increase in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, analysis from the BBC Shared Data Unit shows the NHS is increasingly reliant on recruits from outside the UK and Europe. Last year, 81% of new starters to the NHS in Merseyside were recruited domestically - down from 91% in 2015.
