
The NHS’s backlog of care would not be as bad if the government had given it permission to expand the number of hospital beds in the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic, the head of the health service has suggested.
In July 2020 the NHS sought 10,000 “non-temporary” hospital beds to deal with recovery from the first wave of the crisis and the future surges in case numbers.
