NHL: Legends Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin Collide Again

Two of the NHL’s best players in the past 20 years faced each other on Friday night for the 70th time.  Sidney Crosby’s Pittsburgh Penguins traveled to Washington to take on Alex Ovechkin’s Washington Capitals.

Crosby, 37, and Ovechkin, 39, never tire of facing each other. Arguably among the greatest players and scorers of all time, the two are thriving in the NHL with players nearly half their ages.

The Penguins defeated the Capitals 4-2 in a game of broken streaks for both teams.

1. Washington Capitals 7-Game Home Win Streak Snapped

With the loss, the Capitals fall to 9-4 on the season.  They dominated at home winning seven straight home games.

2. Alex Ovechkin’s 5-Game Goal Streak Snapped

Ovechkin has scored eight goals this season with a five-game consecutive goal streak on the line on Friday night.  He did not score in the Capitals loss.

3. Pittsburgh Penguins Broke 6-Game Road Losing Streak

The 6-8-2 Penguins have had a rough start to the season including a six-game road losing streak that was finally broken in Washington on Friday night.

Penguins goalie Joel Blomqvist continued his impressive start of the season stopping 32 shots and giving up 2 goals in the win.

4. Sidney Crosby Scored His 91st Career Point Against Washington

Crosby has thrived in games against division rival Washington over the years.  On Friday, he scored his 91st career point against the Capitals, the fifth most for Crosby against any franchise.

5. Evgeni Malkin Chimes In With His 84th Game-Winning Goal

The Penguins are blessed with the longevity of two of their legends, Crosby and Malkin.  Malkin scored the 84th game-winning goal of his career, putting him in fourth place among active players in game-winning goals.

Mark your calendars for the next three meetings between these legendary players and their teams on January 18 at Washington, February 22 at Pittsburgh, and the regular season finale on April 17 at Pittsburgh.
