NFL star Christian McCaffrey accidentally injured model wife Olivia Culpo in pre-game hug

Olivia Culpo suffered a painful exchange with her boyfriend Christian McCaffrey as the San Francisco 49ers superstar hugged her on the sidelines before the clash with the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday night.

The model and actress took to social media to share McCaffrey’s helmet collided with her face and potentially injured her when the pair shared a hug. The moment occurred before McCaffrey helped his 49ers to a 22-16 win over the Chargers at Levi’s Stadium.

It was McCaffrey’s third match for the 49ers following his blockbuster trade to the Bay Area from the Carolina Panthers. McCaffrey rushed for 38 yards and a touchdown while also collecting four passes for 39 yards - but the damage had been done on his partner.

“I just gave Christian a hug,” Culpo said. “He was wearing his helmet and I think he just broke my jaw when he came forward and gave me a hug. And I have a whole new respect for the game now.”

Culpo watched the game alongside McCaffrey’s mother Lisa in a private suite at the stadium. They would have been thrilled watching McCaffrey go to work on Sunday, as he enjoyed another impactful performance.

McCaffrey scored a two-yard rush to give the ‘Niners a 19-16 lead late and the team held on to defeat the Chargers. He now has recorded four touchdowns in three games since joining the 49ers.

McCaffrey attended Stanford University in California and has returned to the area following the trade from Carolina, which was welcomed by Culpo as she has lived in the state for the last eight years. The couple celebrated their third anniversary in June.

Culpo was also in attendance for McCaffrey’s historic performance against the Los Angeles Rams last month. The All-Pro running back became the first player since LaDanian Tomlinson in 2005 - and the 11th player in NFL history - to record a rushing touchdown, a passing touchdown and a receiving touchdown in one game.

The 5-4 49ers play the Arizona Cardinals, an NFC West rival, in Mexico City on Monday Night Football in Week 11.
