NFL record smashed by Tampa Bay Buccaneers' victory over Seattle Seahawks in Munich

The NFL has revealed they broke international viewing records when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Seattle Seahawks travelled to Germany this past weekend to play a regular season game.

It was the first ever time that a game had been played in Germany, also the first to be played in Europe outside of the UK, with Tom Brady's Tampa Bay side being victorious over a red-hot Seattle team, coming into the game on a four-game winning streak.

Almost 70,000 had been in attendance at the sell-out crowd at the Allianz Arena, which showed an exciting game as fans made themselves heard by chanting and singing during timeouts and after touchdowns.

And the NFL also confirmed that 5.8 million watched the game - the most watched international game on record. A statement from the NFL read: "Viewership of 5.8 million across TV & digital. 2022 Delivered NFL Network's three-most watched international games ever.

"Viewership for Sunday's game, featuring the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' 21-16 win over the Seattle Seahawks in Munich was 5.8 million viewers (TV+Digital) - surpassing the New York Giants-Green Bay Packers Week 5 game from London this year to be NFL Network's most-watched international game on record."

The game saw Brady look back to his best as his offense dominated throughout the first-half, driving down the field consistently against a Seahawks defence that had been ranked #1 through the month of October.

Geno Smith and the Seahawks mounted a comeback in the second-half, but it wasn't enough as Brady was able to keep his offense on the field and run out the clock to pick up a much-needed win over Seattle.

The NFL will return to Germany next season after signing a contract to do so every year until 2025, but it is not known whether the game will be played in Munich.

Games will also be continued to be played in London, with three a year likely through 2025, with the Jacksonville Jaguars being contracted to play one home game in the English capital until 2026.

This weekend will see the Arizona Cardinals face the San Francisco 49ers in Mexico City - the first game played in Mexico since before the pandemic, in 2019.
