New England Patriots offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien is reportedly looking to add several styles to the team’s offense.
O’Brien came to New England in January to a Patriots team trying to revitalize the wide receiver unit along with quarterback Mac Jones. Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated believes O’Brien is going to take ideas from each of his stops and apply them to the Patriots offense.
New England upgraded their weapons offensively, headlined by wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster and tight end Mike Gesicki. On top of this, the NFL draft is next week. The wide receiver position has several capable players, and there are some talks that New England is looking for a blue-chip running back.
Breer believes that O’Brien’s offense will not only be a mix of his previous stops, but it will be able to take the Patriots to the next level, as transcribed by NBC Sports Boston’s Darren Hartwell.
“I think it’s going to be a hybrid of a lot of different things,” Breer said. “I think it’s going to have some stuff that they did at Alabama that Mac is going to be comfortable with, because Mac was at Alabama. … [O’Brien] coached Deshaun Watson in Houston, he coached Bryce Young the last couple years at Alabama, so he’s got a lot of different ideas.
“I think he’s got really great perspective because he does have the bones of the Patriots offense, but he’s gonna be able to do some things that I think are on the cutting edge of where the sport is going.”
How O’Brien runs the offense could be game-changing, as New England adjusts to its new personnel and a quarterback that needs to have a bounce-back year in Jones.
It will be interesting to see the different offensive styles mixed together, as well as how the offense adapts to the modern NFL game. After last season, an upgraded offense would not be the worst thing.
