NFL insider: Dolphins ‘willing to listen’ on Mike Gesicki trade offers

When the Miami Dolphins placed the $10.9 million franchise tag on tight end Mike Gesicki this offseason, it was noted as a move that made sense.

With a new head coach and new offensive scheme coming in, it was unclear whether or not Gesicki could assimilate into the system and continue his stretch of productive play. The tag would give both sides a chance to see what their partnership would look like without being a long-term commitment.

Well, through six games this season, the former Nittany Lion has recorded just 15 receptions for 170 yards and three touchdowns while playing his lowest snap count (52%) since his rookie season.

That leads many to ask whether or not Gesicki will be around in a few weeks with the trade deadline looming.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler provided an update (subscription required) on Gesicki’s standing with the team in regard to trades.

“The Miami Dolphins are in a weird spot with Mike Gesicki, who is underused in coach Mike McDaniel’s offense. After 73 catches a year ago, he has 15 through the first six games, though three have gone for touchdowns.

Sources say Miami is in the “we’re-willing-to-listen” phase with Gesicki, but isn’t quite shopping his services to other teams. Execs I’ve talked to don’t want much to do with his $10.9 million franchise tag and find it odd Miami placed the tag on him in March to sit him on the bench.”

By Nov. 1 at 1 p.m. ET, the Dolphins will have a decision to make on Gesicki’s future. Will they keep him around and try to get him more involved in the offense, or will they cut their losses and get something back for him instead of letting him walk in free agency?
