NFL fans left bemused by Baker Mayfield's on-field antics after rare Panthers win

Former first overall draft pick Baker Mayfield remained as the back-up quarterback in the Carolina Panthers victory over the Atlanta Falcons with undrafted, former XFL star PJ Walker starting in his place.

Walker would only complete 10 passes for 108 yards and no touchdowns, but it was enough to secure the victory with the Panthers running game dominating as D'onta Foreman rushed for 130 yards and a touchdown and Laviska Shenault Jr adding a touchdown on the ground.

Walker started after being benched in place of Mayfield last week, who came into the game against the Cincinnati Bengals and played respectably, throwing for two touchdowns after Walker played horrifically, with just three completions for nine yards and two interceptions.

But it was Walker who was given the start against the Falcons, with questions now being asked on Mayfield's future.

However, Mayfield is not sulking, being supportive on the sidelines for his team after joining this past summer... some might say a little too supportive.

Mayfield, who was without a helmet, was seen headbutting Panthers players who had been wearing helmets as they exited the field after a touchdown drive in a bizarre showing.

Mayfield's own teammates had even looked confused as to why he would be headbutting them, with fans questioning his true intentions.

One said: "This guy will do anything to remain relevant and make it about him." As another commented: "Is Baker Mayfield trying to enter the concussion protocol?".

It's been a rough few seasons for Mayfield, after having one of the best rookie seasons in NFL history with the Cleveland Browns in 2018, the quarterback has struggled with injuries, playing in 2021 with a torn shoulder.

After the Browns made the controversial decision to trade for Deshaun Watson amidst his legal battle after being accused of sexual misconduct against multiple women, Mayfield was traded to the Panthers this past off-season.

Mayfield has largely struggled as the Panthers starting quarterback, not being able to win his place back after injury, and with Sam Darnold now returning, he may even have dropped to third-choice.

Mayfield will become a free agent this summer, with a host of teams looking for a starting quarterback.
