When it comes to early frontrunners for the Offensive Rookie of the Year award, the smart money is usually on the quarterback position. And with the league welcoming in six first-rounders at the spot this season, that money may be a little more than just smart.
But one writer believes that there could be a potential upset candidate lurking in the Carolina Panthers’ backfield.
Bleacher Report analyst Brad Gagnon recently listed three dark horses for each of the NFL’s major awards in 2024. He writes in running back and second-round pick Jonathon Brooks, who could be a huge help to another youngster on the roster:
In a critical season for quarterback Bryce Young, I can see Carolina and Young leaning heavily on the former Texas star as both a rusher and receiver. It’s complicated by the presence of Chuba Hubbard and Miles Sanders, but neither inspires a lot of confidence right now.
While this is a bold choice considering the infancy of Carolina’s offense, Gagnon makes a good point. Head coach Dave Canales knows how to get the most out of his offensive players, and there is a reason his regime made Brooks the very first rusher off the board this past April.
Oh, and if Brooks is able to pull off such a feat, perhaps the Panthers could be just as big of a surprise on the grander scheme of things.
