California Governor Gavin Newsom has accused Donald Trump of trying to 'buy' American voters with a proposed $5,000 (£3,700) payment after the US president unveiled the pledge at the Republican Party's first-ever midterm convention in Dallas, Texas, on Wednesday, 9 September.

Newsom described the proposal as 'taxpayer-funded blood money' and linked it to Trump's handling of the war with Iran. His comments came as questions mounted over how the proposed payments would be authorised and financed ahead of the November midterm elections.
