A small dog that survived the death of its owners was discovered by a reporter within the debris left over from Hurricane Milton in Florida.

Benji the dog was found underneath piles of rubble at a retirement community in Fort Pierce, Florida, by CBS reporter Morgan Rynor, according to the outlet.

After being missing all night, Rynor shared the story of Benji's rescue while also revealing that his owner's had perished in the storm.

"I can tell you the reason why Benji ran away and was found in the debris next door is because his owners unfortunately are among the victims," Rynor reported while standing in front of a toppled over mobile home, where Benji lived with his owners. She also described how Benji likely fled in fear when the tornado struck and found shelter underneath the debris nearby.

"Look at this pile of the debris right over here to my left hand side," Rynor said. "About two seconds ago we just pulled out this little tiny dog named Benji who has been missing now since last night. His owners were actually in that mobile home right back there. That's where they lived."

Rescue efforts are said to continue in Fort Pierce, as local police and volunteers are working to locate missing pets and support affected families.
